Thunder and Lightning ORTF 3D Sound Library
The first Schoeps ORTF 3D sound library on Bandcamp.
Since Bandcamp currently does not support native multichannel audio formats, we found a workaround by splitting the original ORTF 3D recordings into four synchronized stereo WAV files. A detailed PDF guide is included with the bundle showing exactly how you can rebuild the original 8-channel ORTF 3D recordings inside Reaper in a flash.
While waiting for our ferry to Tasmania, we rented a small Airbnb in Geelong and one evening the sky suddenly turned dark as distant thunder slowly rolled in, followed by some incredible lightning strikes across the neighborhood.
For these recordings we positioned the Schoeps ORTF 3D setup inside a small garden shed with the doors open. Keeping the microphones fully exposed during the lightning felt a little too dangerous. The house itself was located in a quieter residential neighborhood surrounded by gardens, so alongside the thunder you can hear wind moving through trees and bushes and occasionally even the neighbor’s dog barking in the distance.
If you are looking for thunder and lightning recordings with a realistic residential atmosphere rather than heavy rain dominating the entire soundscape, this library has you covered.
ORTF 3D field recordings are still incredibly rare and often very expensive. With this library, and many more to come, we hope to help close that gap so more people can explore immersive recordings without having to spend hundreds of dollars just to experience the format.
Read more here about how to reconstruct the ORTF 3D recordings back into one original 8-channel WAV file.
Or head over to our PayHip sound library account where we also offer this library in its original untouched multichannel format without the need for reconstruction.
