This new sound library captures the quiet beauty of Tasmania’s deep forests shortly after rainfall. Recorded far away from cities and human activity, these soundscapes reveal the subtle life of the forest as it slowly comes back alive after a passing rain shower.

You will hear rain droplets falling from leaves high in the canopy, gentle wind moving through giant trees, and the constant presence of forest birds scattered throughout the landscape. At times the ambience becomes incredibly calm, allowing the sounds of dripping water and distant wildlife to emerge naturally.

One particularly interesting element in these recordings may be the call of a shy lyrebird in the distance. Tasmania is home to the superb lyrebird, a species famous for its unusual and sometimes almost electronic-sounding vocalizations that can resemble laser-like chirps echoing through the forest.

We recorded these ambiences in the woods where the surrounding environment remains largely undisturbed.

All recordings were made using Schoeps CCM 41 microphones in a classic ORTF stereo configuration mounted in a Cinela suspension system. This setup creates an exceptionally detailed and natural stereo image that translates beautifully on both headphones and speakers. For forest ambiences in particular, ORTF remains one of my favorite recording techniques because of how realistic and spacious it feels. Since the Schoeps CCM 41 microphones are supercardioid, they also translate exceptionally well to mono if a more focused or centered sound image is preferred for certain projects.
