Recording Ferry & Boat Sound Effects in Hong Kong
The sounds of Hong Kong are not complete without the ambience of the legendary ferries that carry nearly 500,000 passengers every single day across Hong Kong for over 120 years. We can only imagine how Hong Kong sounded in the past but I’m sure it was magical.
I tried to include as many different ferry sound effects as possible and recorded various transportation options.
I took the Star Ferry between Central Pier and Tsim Sha Tsui ferry terminal.
Later I recorder another trip starting from Central to Lamma on a modern catamaran. I also recorded the ambience around the harbor.
Little known to tourists and a hidden secret are the Aberdeen ferries. Small wooden boats with loud diesel engines cross the small river between the islands south of Hong Kong Island.
These ferries are just amazing. If you are taking this trip and you close your eyes, you will forget that you are surrounded by a fast-paced metropole that changes every day.
NOTE: I recorded several times with the AKG C411pp contact microphone to get more sound effects from the vibrating diesel engines and without the ambience.
