I embarked on an incredible journey, covering 800 kilometers from Saint Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela along the Camino Frances in just 28 days. Throughout this pilgrimage, I carried not only my clothes but also my trusty recording equipment. Although my personal journey has come to an end, the captivating sounds I captured along the way are now available in the Camino Frances Sound Library, and I hope they will accompany all of us for a lifetime.
The initial stretch of my pilgrimage led me over the majestic Pyrenees to Pamplona. Here, I immersed myself in the ambient sounds of nature, from the gentle murmur of rivers and the chirping of insects to the hooting of owls and the melodies of birds. During both day and night, I captured the harmonious symphony of pilgrims passing by, their footsteps resonating with the heartwarming Buen Camino greeting, all within the backdrop of nature’s serene embrace and the bustling life of towns and villages.
This sound library offers a rich tapestry of experiences, guiding you through a diverse array of smaller towns, dense forests, the legendary Meseta (a path I highly recommend not bypassing), vineyard-covered landscapes, serene and lively villages, and the atmospheric essence of larger cities.
I meticulously recorded the tolling of church bells, the tranquility of quiet surroundings, the liveliness of bustling streets and quaint side alleys, the occasional barking of dogs, the diverse avian chorus, the babbling of rivers, the joyous sounds of school recess, the gentle hum of buzzing bees, the soothing caress of the wind, the lively ambience of local markets, and the camaraderie of fellow Pelegrinos passing by over the course of several weeks. And if you’re specifically seeking the sounds of buzzing flies, rest assured, this sound collection has them all.
Throughout this incredible journey, I relied on top-notch recording equipment: the Sound Devices MixPre6ii and a Schoeps DMS kit featuring two Schoeps CCM4 cardioid microphones and one Schoeps CCM8 figure-eight microphone. While it was the ideal setup for this adventure, I can’t help but dream of capturing it all in immersive VR if I ever embark on this pilgrimage again.
