Recording Saturday Night Market Soundscape in Chiangmai, Thailand with Traditional Lanna Music
Every Saturday night the streets near Chiangmai’s Wua Lai Road are filled with vendors, locals, and tourists. This crowded space has become a hot spot to eat delicious street food and grab crafts by local artists.
One weekend, I made it a priority to spend several hours recording around the area. I used a Zoom H6 with the Soundman OKM II Rockstudio binaural microphones.
These recordings include sounds like engines from red buses, people walking, crowd walla, and people speaking Thai. You’ll also hear typical Tuk Tuk sounds and sometimes honks.
Besides the market ambience, I recorded traditional Northern Thailand Lanna music which included instruments like the Pin Pia, the Zueng, and the Zalor. I stopped in front of them and smiled I couldn’t interrupt the play but I showed them my recorder and gave them a sign if I can record this and a friendly smile came back, I placed 200 Baht in the box and sat down and recorded this sound for about 16 minutes. Lucky, almost nobody was there in the beginning but more and more people showed up. The album ends with the sound of street traffic and police whistling to ongoing traffic.
