Recording mechanics cogwheel sounds inside a lighthouse
I am so excited to present you these lighthouse sounds recorded in a super old lighthouse from 1903.
You already know I love machine sounds but this one is so special and unique I can’t even find the right words to describe the feeling when they allowed me going inside for sound recording of the machine sound.
Listen To Lighthouse Sounds
I just got a message from the incredible worldwide lighthouse society! and they told me this “The lighthouse was built by the French administration in 1902 and commissioned in 1903.
The Optic mechanism was made by Barbier, Benard and Turenne, in Paris and probably was made especially for the lighthouse so would date from the same time!.
The Lighthouse Is 116 Years Old
What I know is that the lighthouse was built by a French company called BBT Paris or better known for Barbier, Benard & Turenne. A company founded in 1862 and specialized in constructing lighting systems and for building complete lighthouses all around the world.
Sadly the company was dissolved in 1982. One reason I guess is the incredible quality and if you built machine made for eternity you have nothing to sell anymore.
Think about it, I recorded a piece of history and I am able to archive and share it like a museum in that case a sound museum. 🙂
Sitting in this lighthouse and listening to the machine sounds is like being in a time capsule. It feels like going back in time. Just for a moment.
I am so glad that I found this place and I am so happy to present it to the “sound world”!
Imagine you work in post-production and you have to edit a movie like “darkness falls”! I watched that movie many years ago and I literary couldn’t sleep for a week and the last minutes played in a lighthouse. Imagine they forgot to record this kind of sound on location? That would suck, right?
But this sound can be used for anything sound design related and of course, experimental music makers!

How I Captured The Lighthouse Sounds
I was sitting right next to the mechanical rack-wheel and recorded the turning circles and while I was recording it created different “click-clack” sounds. To my right was a power control generator and this one created this vibrant “buzzing” sound what you can hear in the recording. At one point I got very close with the microphone on it.
Lighthouse Animation With Sounds
I used for the recording my Rode NTG4+ (Mono) the Zoom H6 Recorder and the Rycote Super Blimp but there was no wind inside so I took off the case.
I hope you enjoy the sound and I really hope you create something amazing out of it!
Is the beam from a lighthouse affected by howling wind and rain? It remains perfectly steadfast and unaffected by the storm. Your true self is like that. Nothing can ever harm you once you are consciously aware that it is so.
